Noise canceling headphones have developed massively over the years, from tight passive noise canceling action, to the modern active noise cancellation utilising battery power to assist. The active noise control (ANC) function involves the placing of one or more tiny microphones near the ear, and uses the microphones signal to generate an anti-noise signal. When this signal is produced the headphones ‘cancel’ the noise that is heard in the headphone cup by a method known as destructive inference.

The great thing about headphones with noise canceling attributes, is that one can listen to music at a much lower level that when using standard headphones. The downside of them, if there is one, is that they do use a small battery to power the system, although a single AAA battery can last for over 16 hours of continuous use. They are often a little heavier than non noise canceling headphones. This is however, a small price to pay for the sheer joy of feeling like you are sitting in the room with the band as the music plays.
